Italicizing a Whole Word
January 6, 2005 – 12:00 pmA couple of co-workers have recently started using Word 2003. Much to their annoyance, they found that they could no longer use one of their favorite features: put the cursor anywhere in a word and press CTRL + I to italicize the whole word. I, too, had vaguely wondered about this, but not enough to do anything about it. Thanks to Jay Parry for discovering the solution, which is:
1. Click Tools.
2. Click Options.
3. Click the Edit tab.
4. Put a check in the checkbox labeled “When selecting, automatically select entire word.”
Now, when you press CTRL + I (or other wise turn on italic formatting), the entire word will be formatted without having to first select the word.

READERS WRITE
After reading the article on checking page proofs in Acrobat Reader, Arnold Howard wrote:
I used to edit a magazine. After laying out the articles, the art director sent me the pages in PDF format by email. I used the highlighter [in Adobe Acrobat] to circle mistakes, and the notes feature to explain the corrections. Then I loaded the proofed pages to the publisher’s FTP site.
I added a “+” to the beginning of the file name for proofed files.
I never proofed from printed copies. PDF files were all I needed.
When proofing from a computer screen, I found it helpful to enlarge the pages so that a column filled the monitor. I could spot errors easier because that forced me to concentrate on one column at a time.
Many thanks to Arnold for these useful tips.
